This four piece, hailing from Bristol, although new on the scene are no fledglings. Currently touring with Kasabian, it is clear to see why there is such a growing interest in this energy fuelled band. If you are going to stick anything on your mp3 player to wring every last note out of, then you can't go far wrong with Sister Morphine.

These guys and girl (Maudie Lowe - ex Canatella) have a familiar sound with plenty of assaulting twists and a dark edginess which sets then apart head and shoulders above most of the rest. They blend perfectly a mix of old and new versions of rock/metal/punk and indie fusions, which explode dynamically from any speaker.

First track, 'Down Stairs Mix Up' is upfront and in your face to the point of ripping it off, no time for polite introductions, and who cares when the handshake after drags you inside, smiles then licks your cheek afterwards. This band is what the undearly departed local band Laconic should have been, but they just didn't have the balls.

What is apparent immediately is a striding bass and some of the best guitar shredding I have heard in a long while. It is edgy and exciting and they even throw in a classic rock Wayne's World break to keep you guessing what they're really about. The contrast of the female vocal really lifts this track to an entirely new level.

Track two, 'Money Shot' has a threatening guitar intro which promises something to get your teeth into, but it teases you just enough with its little pull backs. There is something a tad reminiscent of Echobelly/Republica in the vocal from Maudie, but the indie vocal lyric slicks over a raw driving back drop of ripping guitar sounds bursting with strong, surprisingly tightly played drum lines, which are just velvety enough not to bruise your eardrums. This track really shows the bands individual talents on their own merits and collectively, and they even dabble with a musical spanner by putting an undercurrent of industrial darkness into the works.

The third and final track on the EP is 'Breathe' Once again, hypnotic drumming and guitar riffs from Jim Davey (formerly Halo) and Shane Roynon.

My only criticism of this track is that is they should decide who is singing, either it should be just male, or just female. Not being sexist in any way, the female vocal sounds much better so therefore would win hands down. Maudie Lowe executes the lyrics on just an equal footing with anything Debbie Harry could belt out.

'Breathe' could be something very, very special - even down to the very last 'ping' of what sounds like a triangle on the very last note.

These guys are a kick up the arse for the music scene and I can't wait to see them live, because after listening to this EP, I am 100% positive that they can deliver. A very impressive outfit and one to definitely watch with interest for the not too distant future.

imposters. they are identity thieves and posers... they are NOT SISTER MORPHINE... the REAL sister morphine is here;

ocweekly and rex reason steal another bands identity...
anybody read the laweekly? or maybe the ocweekly? let me explain these
papers
hire and employ writers who abuse and use information with every
intention of
malice. they employ and publish false and untrue information knowing
full well
the information is bogus... how do we know this? well there once was
an 80's
band called sister morphine.
the singer informed me that his band name was being mis-represented by
a
publication called the ocweekly... he also explained to me that the
singer in a
band "calling" themselves SISTER MORPHINE named RON KUSTES has stolen
and used the real sister morphine's name...

bass guitar/vocals

tom bremer
lead guitar
contact them by phone at
310-686-9830
not only do they rip off the name but they use photos of far off
church and sky
type images that resemble the "REAL" bands debut cd cover. not only do
they
try associating themselves with that name and using to get bookings in
the
orange county area... they use key words in articles... like the word
MUSTANG
which everyone knows the REAL sister morphine singer BERNARD EDWARDS
drives both a mustang and a cobra...
they even used the phrase of spoken words to the begining of a song on
the
debut sister morphine cd ain't that a shame... how pathetic mr. kustes
is.
an e-mail was shot right over to ocweekly...
so, when asked to remove this name from the fake myspace page, they
refuse...
myspace does NOT refuse and tells them change it or your page is
gone... so
they reluctantly change it and post a lame reason on the blog page.
they call it a name change contest... right on fellas. caught with
your pants down?
ocweekly has refused to remove this article;
http://www.ocweekly.com/music/music/aural-reports/27123/
even though the REAL SISTER MORPHINE has been long ago established and
defunct since the 80's...

it's funny they mention mustangs as description of the "band"...
here's the FAKE article containing FALSE information by the IDENTITY

Like a Bitchen New Mustang: Wild horses couldn’t drag Sister Morphine
away from hard, bluesy rock
By REX REASON

Sister Morphine. Photo by Matt Otto.
Guitarist/vocalist Ron Kustes of Sister Morphine likens his band to
the mustang. Plane, car or animal, a rock band can’t really go wrong
with that one.
What’s your band’s story?
Last year, I was at the end of another band called Spooky Jones. It
was kind of funk, R&B, and a little bit of rock. I did that for five
years, and it wasn’t getting serious enough for me. I decided I wanted
to go back to what got me really excited as a kid: hard, bluesy rock
like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. We [drummer Jim Anderson, bassist
John Hart and guitarist Tom Bremer] started putting this together
about seven months ago.
What was it that made you want to go back to playing hard, bluesy
rock?
I gave the funk thing the best try I could, but it never really went
anywhere. It’s like it wasn’t meant to do anything. One of the things
that helped last year was when Wolfmother came out. I was listening to
those guys [and] going, “These guys make me feel like I’m 14 years old
again, listening to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.” That just brought
me back. [Wolfmother is] a record that sounds like it could have come
out in 1970-something. And Zeppelin, Sabbath and the Stones wrote
stuff that people are still inspired by 40 years later. And I’ve
always wanted to write music that will be around. You listen to
something from the ’80s, and you instantly know that it’s from the
’80s.
How do you feel about the description “classic rock” for your band?
I like the title, but I don’t like that it has baggage associated with
it. We’re like one of those brand-new Mustangs that have that old feel
to it, but they’re new and bitchen. That’s what we’re like. They look
like the old ones, but they’re new. That’s the best way I can explain
it.
How does it go over in Orange County?
We seem like we’re more unique because we play with a bunch of bands,
and they all have the emo sound, or the new rock sound, or the rock/
pop sound—whatever it is. I’m okay with playing anywhere, really. I
like standing out. If I go into a room and there’s a bunch of guys
with long hair and beards, I start feeling weird because then there
are too many of us that look the same.
Have any favorite favorites?
I like playing this little Tropics Lounge in Fullerton. It’s a fun
place to play. It’s a little hole in the wall with a great vibe.
Everybody has a good time. And we’re a band from Fullerton, so it
feels right.
